Geocache Description:

Another cache in the Childhood Memories Cache series. This one commemmorates our weekly attendance to the Sunday mass service in the Nuestra Señora de la Asunción church in the heart of Denia.

We always attended the Sunday service with the entire family. As a child I really didn't understand much of the Spanish, virtually nothing at all. But then again, in Belgium I didn't listen very much to the priests either . I just sat through the whole thing until it was over. Meanwhile observing the interior of the church, the rotating fans on the pillars, and the churchgoers. Especially the women with their 'abanícos'. Secretly hoping to catch a tiny cooling wave of their fans. Sometimes, someone fainted in the heat. Those were the heights of a service, because finally something happened. My mom used to rush to such person claiming 'I'm a nurse'. A profession she hadn't practiced for decades, still that prevented her from rushing to the front each time again, proclaiming 'soy enfermera!'. Mostly, a slap on the face of the fainted person was enough. lol. And the one other thing I recalled was that the Spanish churchgoers had the 'body of Christ' placed directly in their mouths, instead of in their hands, like we, Northern Europeans are used to undergo this Sacrament. Finally, as a child I was fascinated by the fact Spanish Catholics have their baby girls' ears pierced before being baptized. As a child I imagined terribly pains being inflicted on those poor babies, not understanding what was happening to them...
