Momostenango is a small town in the highlands of Guatemala. The nearest city is Quetzaltenango. You can get there by public transport ("chicken bus") or best by private car. Driving times are about one hour from Quetzaltenango and four to five hours from Guatemala City.There is a fairly good hotel in town called "Otoño".
The Spanish word "riscos" is translated by steep cliff. In English it is best described as fairy-chimneys, spire-like rock formations formed by specific erosion. Usually there is a harder material at the top which prevents the softer material underneath from erosion by water but at other areas the soft material is uncovered and therefore washed away. Such landscapes are seen in some other places, for example in Göreme, Turkey.
The area is geologically young and characterized by active or dormant nearby volcanoes, igneous rock and metamorphic rocks mainly from Quaternary.
At the given site in Momostenango only few riscos still have their "caps" and people say they are getting eroded quickly and used to be more spectacular before. As far as I know there are no other formations like this in Guatemala and therefore the site is of some interest. To log this as found you have to send me the answers to the following questions.

1. How many layers of different rock material can you see from the given coordinates?
2. Describe the color and grain size of the layers.
3. How many spires with cover stones can you see at the coordinates?
4. (Optional) take a picture of yourself and your GPS near the coordinates.
Momostenango es un pueblo en la zona alta de Guatemala. La ciudad más cercana es Quetzaltenango. Si puede viajar allá por transporte público (camioneta) o en carro privado (método preferido). El viaje dura una hora de Quetzaltenango y cuatro a cinco horas de Guatemala ciudad. Hay un hotel bueno que se llama ¨Otoño¨.
La palabra ¨riscos¨ en Castellano signífica roca empinada. Se puede describirlas como torres altas formadas de rocas o de materia suave. Normalmente hay una placa de materia dura encima que proteja la materia suave de la erosión. Al alrededor de un risco la materia suave ya está desaparecida por las fuerzas de la lluvia y del aire. Paisajes parecidas se ven por ejemplo en Goreme, Turquía.
La zona es geologicamente joven y se caracteriza por volcanes activos o durmientes en la vecindad. Hay rocas magmaticas y metamórficos. En el lugar en Momostenango solamente algunos riscos aún tienen su „sombrero“ y la gente reporta que la erosión les degrada rápidamente. En tiempos pasados se vieron más espectacular.
Según mi información no hay otros lugares con riscos en Guatemala y por eso este lugar puede ser de interés. Para lograr un „find“ se manda las respuestas de las preguntas siguientes a mi dirección de correo electrónico.
