This is the first Geocache I have hidden. It has been a great experience, surely more will follow.
This Cache is at the beginning of a private road that crosses the Deschutes River. My ancestors have built/maintained a bridge in this area since the 1880's. This is the third Bridge at this location. The first (approximately 1908) was supported by two fir arches. The second one was simply four large cedar logs making the span with wood planking for a deck. The current Bridges supportive structure (1967) is a train car that originally had a crane mounted on it. It spans 60 feet between a concrete bulkhead on one end and piling drove down to bed rock on the other. The decking is metal planking that tends to rattle quite alarmingly when cars drive over it. The Elder Muggle known to frequent these parts is harmless :-) 12/2020 The bridge has received a bit of TLC and after 3+ decades it rattles no more! The name may not correctly describe it now but this geocache has been a success so it will continue to share a bit of our history. In 1908 this bridge provided access to a diversion dam that diverted water via a canal to Lawrence Lake. The impounded water helped provide dependable hydro electric power for street cars in Tumwater. This operation ceased in 1928.
