For decades, a number of old dump sites have languished at various locations along the lower edge of the Escarpment, rusting away on thier own imperceptively slow timeline. These mangled mazes of metal are vary dangerous to those who occasionally venture here and have no place in this wonderful State Park, even if they are off the beaten path. We've been chipping away at these heavy metal hangouts for a couple years...
Well, we're back for the rest and this time we're bringing in reinforcements! Last year we pulled out far more than anticipated, several massive sleds of metal debris, and yet it felt like we hardly made a dent. For those who participated last year, this is your opportunity for redemption and you get to earn an Earth Day CITO badge in the process!
We'll once again hump out whatever we can carry from the lower bluff face where this stuff was dumped, going up over the top. This year, however, we're going to have cordened off collection points, as established by the Head of Park Maintenance, so we don't have the additional burden of draggin all this stuff down the trails! Park personnel will also be on hand to assist in the Heavy Metal extraction, like the car husk we couldn't tackle last year.

Personal Protective Equipment
UPDATE 4.20 Lightening the PPE to a RECOMMENDATION. Not all of us have industrial grade footwear or vests, but it is recommended that each participant wear PPE during the extraction, including steel-toed boots, heavy leather gloves and orange safty vests. Just bring what you can. I will supply some leather gloves, wire nips and metal sheers. A safty briefing will be given and waiver forms will be signed and collected. We will divide into two teams. South Team and North Team. I will need a team leader for the North end.

Teams should be aware that much of the lower terrain is treacherous in spots and must be very alert and agile in the process of moving along the lower embankment. Extraction teams should be careful not to disturb the landscape any more than minimally necessary to remove metal. Some hand tools will be on hand for tricky bits, but heavy duty tool use will be limited to park personnel. Permission to conduct this extraction has been given and coordinated by Linda Guelig, Park Superintendent of High Cliff State Park
