A brief history of Nailsea Methodist Church
Methodism has deep roots in Nailsea dating back to 1789 when the first Methodist sermon was preached on the village green. 3 years later, the first Methodist chapel was opened on 5th August 1792 in what is now Chapel Barton in the Kingshill area. A second chapel was built not far away on Union Street. In 1914 the chapel was opened in Silver Street and the two Methodist societies were united. By the 1960’s additional plots of land surrounding the Silver Street site had been acquired and the old building extended. In 1965 the MYCON building was built (with help from Somerset County and Central Government), along with an all-weather outdoor floodlit sports area, to provide a Youth Centre for the local community. By the 1990’s the town had grown and the church was bursting at the seams, which led to the radical development of a new multi-purpose church on the Silver Street site in 1992. In addition the MYCON building, which had endured 30 years of heavy use, was refurbished and renamed the Wesley Building after the Methodist founder John Wesley.
