Geocache Description:

Helvellyn

The meet is at noon until about 12:30pm depending on the weather. Location is in the shelter at the top of Helvellyn. On Saturday 11th June 2016

Helvellyn is the highest point of the Helvellyn range, a north-south line of mountains to the north of Ambleside, between the lakes of Thirlmere to the west of the range and Ullswater to the east. It is actually the third-highest point both in England and in the Lake District, and access to Helvellyn is easier than to the two higher peaks of Scafell Pike and Sca Fell. The scenery includes three deep glacial coves and two sharp-topped ridges on the eastern side (Striding Edge and Swirral Edge).

I first went up the mountain in my teens and then again in my twenties. When our lads were young I then went back up in their teens. All of my visits to the mountain we in pre caching days and ever since I started caching this has been on my to-do list. I have meant to do it many times but always found some excuse or another to put it off. We are staying near Keswick in May and I thought I might take a hike up Helvellyn. The more I thought about it the more I thought about all the other easier caches I could get and get this one at a later time. Yup looking to put it off again! So I very quickly in a moment of positive thought decided to have an event at the Shelter at the top. That way I will have to attend and thus finally get my lazy ^&%% up the mountain.

There are several routes to the top in all my past ascents have been from Glenridding and up either by Swirral or Striding Edge. This time as we are stopping in Keswick it will be from the west and to be decided. We look forward to meeting other cachers up there or on the route. We are also hoping for some fine weather and grand views.
