The Whittlesey Street Pride Group is made up of local residents who want to make Whittlesey and the surrounding villages a cleaner, safer and more attractive place to live. The Street Pride scheme gives volunteers the opportunity to make a difference to their local environment by holding clean up events, including litter picking and bulb planting reporting environmental crimes, such as litter, graffiti, damaged Council property and fly tipping.
In the ten years it has existed the group has removed over 40 tonnes of rubbish from the local streets. It is highly visible after public events like the Whittlesey Straw Bear Festival which sees 10,000 people descend on the town for three days of fun, frolics and mayhem. The size of the clean-up task after such an event is enormous, but the Street Pride volunteers step up to the mark and have the town cleaned up within 48 hours!
As well as cleaning up rubbish dropped and dumped by others, Street Pride enhances the beauty of the town with floral displays. These displays are usually sponsored by local businesses but maintained by the Street Pride group.
Although I have no connection with the Street Pride group I, like many others, do appreciate their efforts and their displays. If this small series helps you to enjoy their handiwork too, then that's all I wanted!
Congratulations to Graham on FTF!
