Got it today. I helped get a house recovered from the flood on K St. SW. We worked for 3 months so it could be reoccupied. The house next door still sits as it was after the flood. It has a fenced yard and had an ice machine in the yard that floated in during the flood. . As soon as we were allowed into the area the damaged contents were removed. We had a portable generator and two power washers. The flood was 7 foot deep at the house, the first floor had 48 inches of water. Mud was flushed from the first floor and it took two days to pump out the basement. Everything that was under flood water was washed down with chlorine and flushed. We ran fans and dried the house out. We power washed the clothes washer, drier and central air conditioning compressor and flushed and dried the motors and controls. Saved them! A new high efficiency gas furnace and the ducts had to be replaced. All wiring outlets and switches that were flooded had to be replaced and a new service panel were installed per code. Those old houses needed them anyway. The subfloor was stable and didn’t buckle so we saved that. Removed all kitchen cabinets and counters and replaced. Removed the old 12 inch baseboards and opened up bottoms of lathe and plaster walls, dried them and saved the walls. Saved the staircase framing and built-in book cases. The flooded areas could only be occupied during daylight hours. The areas were closed after dark. The city water system was saved and the high bridge on 380 connected both sides of the river. Things would have been much worse without water and a way to cross the river.
