< The demolished Kousatsu-ba -- Offcial Bulletin Board >
Kousatsu-ba was a place where governments used to post laws and regulations as an offcial bulletin board until Edo period (= tiil mid 19th century). There used to be a Kousatsu-ba at major ports, bridges, or entrance of post-station towns, and official notices of governments were placed here.
Especially, the Tokugawa government, between 17th and 19the centuries, established the nationwide Kousatsu-ba system. Not only the central (Tokugawa) government but also local domain governments placed thier own regulations here.
These offcial notices were written in easy-understood simple language, and often used as textbooks for school children to learn written language.
It is told the Kousatsu-ba of Ochiai-juku was placed at the eastern end of the town, but doesn't exist anymore. Only the monument stands at the waypoint.

＜高札場跡＞
高札場は、古代から江戸時代にかけて、法令を住民に広く知らせるために設けられた場所で、いわば政府の掲示板でした。主要な港や大きな橋、宿駅の入口などに置かれ、時の政府の公式な通知が行われた場所でした。
特に江戸幕府は、高札場を全国的な民衆への告知制度として確立させました。幕府のみならず各藩も自藩の法令を掲示するようになりました。
高札場に掲げられた法令には、仮名交じり文などの平易な書き言葉が使用されたため、寺子屋の子供たちの教科書としても利用されたと言います。
落合宿の高札場は、町の東の端に当たる場所にあったとされていますが、残念ながら現在は残っていません。ウェイポイントに示した場所に碑が立っているのみです。
