Geocache Description:

Enjoy scenery from Shimogeta bridge.
(See "Ochiai-juku #1" for the information about Ochiai-juku and Parking information.)

< Shimogeta bridge and Nakasendo Road >
The old Shimogeta bridge contributed to a typical scenery of Ochiai-juku, which is shown on the picture by Hiroshige, the famous painter who completed the pictures of all post-station towns of Nakasendo Road.
During the Edo period, the bridge got washed away so repeatedly and the Tsuzuraore pass located beyond this bridge was so steep that the Tokugawa government made a new route of Nakasendo Road that didn't cross the Ochiai river here.
The new route, however, had also difficult conditions and its distance was much longer than the original one.  The government finally made a new route with a gentler pass than original Tsuzuraore pass and the Shimogeta-bridge route was retrieved.
There is a small dam on the Ochiai river near this bridge.  Enjoy the impressive view of waterfall there.
