< Shin-Chaya >
"Shin-Chaya" literally means "new tea-stall." There used to be an "old" one several hundred meters south from here and it was replaced to the present location at the end of the Edo period. This is how "Shin-Chaya" was named.
A monument of "Kiso-ji (Kiso road) from here to the north" stoods here. The letters on the monument were written by Toson Shimazaki, a famous novelist born in Magome in 19th century.

落合宿から馬籠宿までの中山道を歩きましょう。
＜新茶屋＞
古くは、この場所より数百メートル南に旧の茶店があったそうですが、江戸時代の終わりに現在の場所に移ったので、これを新茶屋と呼ぶようになったそうです。
ここには、馬籠生まれの島崎藤村の書である「是より北 木曽路」の碑が立っています。
