Geocache Description:

Steptoe Butte: Past and Present

This butte was first called Pyramid Peak. The name was changed to Steptoe Butte to honor Colonel Steptoe, who fought in an 1858 battle near the present town of Rosalia.

In the 1880's, James S. Davis built a resort and observatory at the butte's top. He added a powerful telescope to the roof for his guests' amusement. Because his business transactions always dealt with cash, James S. Davis became known as Cashup Davis. The Davis' original homestead also became known as Cashup and was the first train stop north of Colfax. In 1911, fifteen years after his death, the abandoned "resort" burned down.

In 1945, the owner of Steptoe Butte, Virgil T. McCroskey, donated the land to the people of the state to form Steptoe State Park. The summit still provides a great panoramic view of the Palouse Country, though the ride up can be a bit nerve racking... just like in the 1800's.

Not sure if they fired cannons from the top of Steptoe Butte, but Grandma found a cannonball near the Butte in the early 1900's. Bring your metal detector when you visit...you never know what you might find :-)

The "Related Web Page:" link above provides further info regarding Davis and the Butte. (Click here if you are using the geocaching app, as the Related Web Page link above doesn't seem to be available when using the app.)
BYOP (bring your own pen) and please put the cache back where you found it.
