This one shouldn't be too difficult. Walk a little ways farther and you will be on the bridge. From there you can enjoy the view! When you are ready for the cache, return to ground zero. You are looking for a small black bison tube. You may very well need stealth during the day. Also please take caution as despite the cache being accessible from the side walk, sometimes traffic can be pretty heavy in the area. Watch your little ones!
I attempted to place this cache on the fishing pier you can see off to the east first. Unfortunately, despite being in a parking lot the pier is technically within the bounds of the Fire Island National Seashore, where caches are not permitted. Then, I tried to place it closer to the bridge so that people could enjoy the view- and a benchmark that is up the road a little ways. Unfortunately, that is frowned on as well!
If you look at the map you will see a noticable lack of caches within the boundaries of the bridge and park. This geocache is just about as close as we can get to the National Park area.
Still, that shouldn't stop you from visiting!
There are beautiful ocean beaches, a great snack bar, miles of wilderness, and a visitor center. There is also an expensive parking fee. You can avoid this by parking in the marina to the north and walking down (pick one of the car spots, not the long ones designed for boats).
For this cache, you can also park at the information center just to the north and walk up.
Interestingly I have never seen the information center serving it's purpose, or any purpose for that matter. Maybe a fellow cacher will be able to shed some light on it's purpose?
This cache is part of a series. You should not need to unhook it from it's hiding spot! Just unscrew the container :)
If you would like to find the bench mark, cross the road to the East side and walk up the side walk until you come to the green railing leading up to the bridge. You will see it in the cement on the ground in this area. Enjoy the hunt!
