Area History:
The shriek of steam through a brass whistle, echoing off the Gorge cliffs, signaled the arrival of a steamboat. Steamboats had their heydey on the Columbia from the 1850s to the 1920s. In early-day Stevenson, the arrival of a sternwheeler was the high point of the day, bringing most of the settlement to the river's edge.
Stevenson fueled the huge steamboat boilers with wood cut from surrounding forests. From dock to deck, legendary quantities of cordwood changed hands.
