This is a virutal cache that was placed on July 4, 2002 by Skullduggery and Cachebandits! Located on Witch Island, a bird and wildlife sanctuary, this cache will provide the finder with many many wonderous views and hours of exploring the tidal pools and island itself.
Witch Island is located in McFarland's Cove, also known as Upper John's Bay. It is also near what is called THE GUT, which is the strait that lobster boats motor through to get to the South Bristol Co-op, and the other side of the South Bristol Peninsula. To claim credit for this cache, you must go to the coordinates listed above and e-mail the cache owners a description of the Witch Island sign, noting also what is written on the back. There are many many tidal pools all around this island with an abundance of organisms and sealife dwelling within. There is an open view of the Atlantic ocean from one side looking out across John's Bay all the way to Europe. We had attempted to venture out to this island last year, but the severe current and massive swells proved a little rough for two people in a canoe. This year, we had much better luck as the waves were significantly more calm and the day was bright and sunny. Take heed as the weather in this area can change at the drop of a hat, remember, this is basically the open ocean. You will see thousands, and we mean THOUSANDS of lobster buoys dotting the bay with their multi-colored paint. The difficulty may be harder depending on where you start out and what type of floating vessel you decide to use to make your way to this island. You can launch a boat into the water for free near the rotating bridge by the co-op, or you could be brave like we were and start out from poorhouse cove, haha. Most of all, just be careful, this is the legendary Witch Island after all, and there may be some witches waiting for you or watching over the weather to create a tidal wave to sweep you away.
