The City of Dauphin has a very diverse religious background, evident by the number and variety of churches in and around the city. In your cache quest you will be brought to some of these landmarks, some have historical plaques, some have their own websites, a few I will try to bring some enlightenment to, have fun learning about Dauphin’s heritage.
(Unfortunate due to nearness of adjacent caches, I am unable to bring you to all Dauphin churches.)
Here is a story of determination to serve the community.
The facility of today was constructed by the Federal Government and operated as the McKay Indian Residential School overseen by St Paul’s Anglican Church from 1955 to 1989. The legacy of residential school systems is felt in many communities today. The then Western Christian College purchased the facility and ran the college for 15 years. The Dauphin Church of Christ held their services in the auditorium of the college. At the end of this time, the college decided to move to Regina, Saskatchewan leaving the church without a facility. The college attempted to auction the facility but this failed but they move the college anyway continuing to manage the facility as rental apartments for another year. During this time there was much discussion, mediation and prayer and in 2003 the Church of Christ purchased the properties. To help pay for the purchase, it was decided to increase the number of apartment units, upgrading the facility to meet new building codes. Due to the stigmatism associated with residential schools a new organization was created called Parkland Crossing with the intent to become a community mission, this mission continues to grow today. The current facilities and services offered include: affordable housing consisting of 20 apartments and 34 dormitory rooms; the Dauphin and District Community Food Bank; the Wardrobe Clothing Room for lightly used items; a community indoor playground and family room opened in 2007; a gymnasium; dining hall with commercial kitchen; and a multipurpose room and fireside room. Parkland Crossing is a diverse multi use facility for anyone in the Dauphin area as even now 3 other churches/groups take turns preparing meals and serving the local people.
(Cache placed with the permission of the church.)
