When Chef-Owner Ed LaDou opened Caioti Pizza Cafe in North Hollywood in 1986, he planned to share what he had learned from world-class eateries like Spago, where he almost single-handedly invented the now famous California Pizza. Surprisingly, it was one of his salads that put his restaurant on the map.
The restaurant moved to Studio City in the late 1990's, and sometime in 1993, an overdue pregnant woman entered the restaurant and ordered the romaine and watercress salad with balsamic dressing. She went into labor the next day. After she told an overdue friend what happened, her friend went and ordered the same salad, and the same thing happened. The rest is history. A local legend and many babies were born after that. They get pregnant women in the restaurant every day; sometimes 20 or more. When they come in, the staff don't even ask, they just bring out the salad.
The salad may do nothing more than calm nerves, but it is believed that balsamic vinegar may cause uterine contractions.
