Geocache Description:

Hike past the pond, through the oak savannah, and over the Bachelor Creek bridge. This is a geocache that will take you through some beautiful country with a cache that is not too difficult. Good for families with kids that are old enough to handle about a 2 mile walk. Or if you are looking for more of a challenge for the day, take the long way around!

This is one of a series of geocaches placed to highlight the Mildred Kanipe Memorial Park. This cache is in the area that used to be Underwood Ranch. If you scale Underwood Hill, you will actually be at the highest point of the park. The park contains numerous hiking trails so make sure to bring a map (visit link)

*note - I took my whole family with 5 kids ages 10 months to 8 years old on this hike so I would say it is suitable for kids although it is about 2 miles round trip.

Mary Mildred Kanipe (born in 1907) was a very colorful rancher that grew up working the same ranch just outside of Oakland Oregon almost her entire life. Mildred never married and ran the ranch by herself with the occasional help of a hired hand or high school boys. She raised cattle, sheep, goats, rabbits, chickens, and hay. In the 1940s she also ran a dairy, which, it is said, provided the money to purchase the neighboring Underwood ranch. Her Aunt Mary, who stayed on until she died in 1955, provided much needed assistance with the household chores.
In 1983, Mildred Kanipe passed away, and left her beloved ranch to the public as a county park. Mildred’s gift included almost 1,100 acres of land consisting of pastures, creeks, rolling hills, orchards and forests. Historical structures include a turn-of-the-century schoolhouse, a farmhouse, and outbuildings.
