Geocache Description:

This cache is part of a series of caches reflecting Oconto County History. Please respect the delicate nature of the surroundings, being careful not to damage vegetation and areas/items that may be of historical significance. Reports of such nature will result in the archiving of these caches.

During the mid-1800’s, small fishing villages were settled along the shores of Green Bay by Norwegian and Swedish immigrants. One early Green Bay shore commercial fishing settlement was founded by the Samuel Thomas family just to the south of here on Co. Y where the D.E. Hall Park 1 is currently situated. It existed from about 1855 until 1871 when it was destroyed by the Great Peshtigo Fire and abandoned. Not too far west from there on Swedetown Road is a tiny, old Norwegian cemetery dating back to those times. And about a mile further down the road is a quaint, old Swedish cemetery. Far be it for a Norwegian to be buried in a Swedish cemetery…and vice versa. It would be worthwhile to explore them if you love history.

The geocache is a medium-size camoed container. Bring your own pen/pencil. It is not winter-friendly but contains a few tradeable items for the kids. Please trade fairly…no junk!

Be sure to take a walk out to the end of the breakwater in the park. It offers a wonderful view and on a clear day you can see across to Door County.
