Prairie Overlook Traditional Cache

Located at the west edge of the prairie as soon as you enter the gate to Turkey Creek Preserve. This is the best prairie overlook on the entire property.

Walk past the Turkey Creek property sign with the Bur Oak Land Trust logo. Enter the property past the metal gate. Head due west towards the picnic table. Continue along the edge of the prairie. Avoid walking through the prairie to avoid stepping on baby quail and young wild flowers. Head west until you reach the fence line. The trail continues south all the way around the prairie. Happy hunting! This location provides a long range view to the North East over the rolling Iowa landscape. (Iowa is not flat) This prairie offers great habitat for birds and bees and the best kind of bugs. Enjoy the forbs that bloom throughout the year. This prairie grows tall with big bluestem, Indian grass, and switch grass. The sandy soil is held in place by a deep root system the prairie provides. This location is an example of “edge” habitat. Woodlands are nearby, pasture on one side, a line of fence is present, and in my opinion the key element prairie is the cherry on top. Take a minute to enjoy the view and the sights and sounds of the prairie.
