Geocache Description:

Meet between 10-10:30am at the posted coordinates. At 10:30am, those who wish can go for an mountain bike ride (or hike) in the Banner Forest.

The 16th in a series of events along the many mostly flat, mostly paved biking/walking trails in the Seattle area.  As a change of pace, this time we will meet in the parking area for a mountain biking area.  There will be no organized ride through the area, as I assume people's skill level varies.  Instead, those of us who wish to ride will just go off in the direction(s) we wish.

Per geocaching.com event guidelines, the actual 'event' is the meet-up from 10-10:30am at the posted coordinates, which is the parking lot for the Banner Forest Heritage Park in Kitsap County.  The location is approximately 4 miles from the Southworth Ferry Dock, so if you're biking it's an easy ride to/from the ferry (which stops at Fauntleroy and Vashon).  I plan to take the 8:25 ferry from Fauntleroy.

This event is outdoors, but I will only cancel this event if the weather is terrible: heavy rain, lightning/thunder, snow or ice. Bring a waterproof layer if it might rain, and enough layers/gloves/etc to ward off the cold.  If you're riding, I advise fenders and something to wipe off mud from your bike and yourself when you're done.  A mountain bike or at least a hybrid is probably a good idea (as opposed to a road/racing bike).

Information for the ride:

The Banner Forest is a 1x1 mile park with many trails suitable for hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian uses.  In May, the trails are likely to be muddy, and some might be technical (there is a wetland in the middle of the park, so if you want to stay dry, try the perimeter).  If you're unsure of your skills, take it slow and maybe just stick to the interior road (see the map).  Personally, I feel comfortable trying the trails, but I'm hardly an expert and will probably stop and get off the bike frequently.  Everyone who ventures into the park should have a copy of the map, as there are numerous intersections and it's easy to get turned around.

There have been reports of bears in the park, although if it's crowded, that is less likely to be a concern.  Also, if it's crowded, the parking lot might be full; all the more reason to bike to the start from the ferry.

All riders and walkers should obey park rules:  not all trails are open to bikers, bikes should yield to other users, and pedestrians and cyclists should practice proper etiquette if they encounter a horse.  In general, be courteous to other users.

There are no spots to buy food or drink in or near the park, but there is at least one store near the Southworth Ferry Dock.  Bring along some snacks, and maybe hang out at a cafe or restaurant when the ride is over.

Please show up well before 10:30 so we can leave on time.  Check your brakes and air beforehand if you will be biking.

Participants in the optional bicycle ride hold harmless the cache owner/event organizer and assume all risks and responsibilties involved in riding a bicycle on trails and streets. Wear a helmet, dress in layers, and bring a spare tube.

If you have any suggestions/requests for trails to visit on future events, feel free to mention them in your log.
