Geocache Description:

The Austin Cemetery also known as Whitson, goes back in history to our pioneer days.On 12/4/1821, the 80 acre tract of land here was entered by Samuel Smallwood who had squatted there for several years before he received this patent to the land. Then on Apr 13, 1825 he sold the land to Thomas Whitson, who was born in VA 5/5/1784.Thomas came to Clark County, IN where on Aug 3, 1807 he married Susannah Smallwood." Thomas is shown in the 1820 Census as living in Clark Co., but must have moved to Scott County before buying the land from Samuel Smallwood.Records at the Court House show that on 7/8/1839 Thomas deeded one-acre of land to Thomas Whitson, Lorenzo D. Jacobs and William Hughbank's trustees of the Methodist Church. At that time a church building was already there, and a cemetery was in use.Thomas died 5/2/1843 and is buried there in a marked grave. His wife Susann died at the age of 70.After Austin was established, the Congregation organized the Austin Methodist Church. Susannah Smallwood Whitson cemetery records show her as the daughter of T & S.She is buried at Austin Cemetery. ,
