Geocache Description:

Being a canoe guy where else would I place my first caches except along a river?  This cache is one of a series of eleven caches placed along a nine mile stretch of the Willimantic River.  There are four different access points so you don’t have to do all nine miles at once.

Before heading out I would suggest checking the Merrow Road U.S.G.S. river gauge. The absolute low end of navigability is 1.7 feet. At this level a paddler skilled at navigating shallow water won't have to get out of her boat but will scrape rocks at times. People that are not as skilled may end up stuck on rocks. Below the second parking area the lowest doable level is 1.6 feet. Below the third parking area it may be navigable in the summer but I'm not positive. The river gauge is located near the second parking area. This entire section of river has no rapids, just swift water.

Most of the caches are placed on islands so a canoe or kayak is the way of finding the caches. You are looking for a square camoed pill bottle measuring 2” X 2” X 5”. The caches contain a pen, a pencil, and a matchstick container. Inside the matchstick container is the log which is printed on waterproof, tear resistant paper. None of the caches are placed on the ground in hopes that high water won’t wash it away.
