In July of 1916 an 8½ foot man-eating shark attacked 5 people as it made its way up the Jersey Shore. Today marks the 100 year anniversary of when the shark re-wrote the book on shark behavior by swimming up the tiny Matawan Creek and killing two bathers. Join us for "take-out" as we do as the locals do and sit on the dock of the bay watching the sunset and reflecting on the unpredictability of nature. It was here in Keyport that Captain Cottrell saw the shark swim up the creek and it was from here that boats were launched by the scores to hunt down the creature. It took 2 days and hundreds of fishermen, hunters and members of the Coast Guard before anyone caught or killed anything large enough. On July 14th two fishermen from Staten Island had their boat attacked by a great white shark. They managed to kill it and bring it back to land where, upon dissection, human remains were found in it's stomach. The nightmare was finally over.
The event will last from 6:30 to 8:30 (sunset). I am hoping to have a local historian available to recount the legend of the shark. If not we will share some vittles, some geo-chat and a moment of silence for Lester Stilwell and Stanley Fisher who were the final two victims of the shark.
Pizza, subs, fresh seafood and ice-cream are available for take-out within a few hundred feet of the event.
