Os descobrimentos Portugueses
Os historiadores geralmente referem-se à "era dos descobrimentos" como as explorações marítimas pioneiras realizadas por portugueses e espanhóis entre os séculos XV e XVI, que estabeleceram relações com África, Américas e Ásia, em busca de uma rota alternativa para as "Índias", movidos pelo comércio de ouro, prata e especiarias. Estas explorações no Atlântico e Índico foram seguidas por outros países da Europa, França, Inglaterra e Países Baixos, que exploraram as rotas comerciais portuguesas e espanholas até ao oceano Pacífico, chegando à Austrália em 1606 e à Nova Zelândia em 1642. A exploração europeia perdurou até realizar o mapeamento global do mundo, resultando numa nova mundivisão e no contacto entre civilizações distantes, alcançando as fronteiras mais remotas muito mais tarde, já no século XX.
The Portuguese discoveries
Historians often refer to the "Age of Discovery" as the pioneering maritime explorations carried out by Portuguese and Spanish between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, which established relations with Africa, the Americas and Asia, seeking an alternative route to the "Indies" moved by the trade of gold, silver and spices. These explorations in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans were followed by other European countries, France, England and the Netherlands, who explored the Portuguese and Spanish trade routes to the Pacific Ocean, arriving in Australia in 1606 and New Zealand in 1642. Para assinalar as terras descobertas, os navegadores portugueses colocavam padrões, marcos de pedra com as armas portuguesas e uma inscrição que, para além de servirem de ponto de referência àqueles que ali chegassem nas viagens seguintes, destinavam-se também a afirmar a soberania portuguesa no local onde eram depostos.
Patterns of Discovery
To mark the discovered lands, the Portuguese navigators placed patterns, stone markers with the Portuguese arms and an inscription, in addition to serving as a point of reference to those who there came the following trips also were intended to affirm the Portuguese sovereignty in where were deposed.
A descoberta de São Tomé e Príncipe.
Crê-se que a ilha de S. Tomé foi descoberta (ou achada - alguns autores consideram que existiria uma população nativa: os Angolares) a 21 de ezembro (dia de S. Tomé) de 1470 pelos navegadores João de Santarém, Pêro Escobar e João de Paiva que, a mando do Rei D. Afonso V de Portugal, exploravam a costa ocidental africana. O povoamento do arquipélago por colonos portugueses iniciou-se em 1485 por João de Paiva, a quem D. João II havia doado a ilha. Os primeiros colonos, que também desembarcaram aqui em Ana Ambó, estabeleceram-se na costa norte da ilha, fundando uma povoação na baía de Ana Chaves.
The discovery of Sao Tome and Principe.
It is believed that the island of St. Thomas was discovered (or found - some authors consider that there would be a native population: Angolares) to 21 ecember (day of St. Thomas) 1470 by João de Santarém browsers, Pero Escobar and João de Paiva who, at the behest of King Alfonso V of Portugal, exploring the West African coast.
