Witness the power of Mother Nature first hand, as an old dam on the Black River creates a large rapid, ferocious enough to capsize any craft foolish enough to try to venture through. While you are retrieving the cache, take a moment to observe the power of erosion. Evidence of erosion comes from the exposed rock wall, and the segmented layers of rock around the cache site. Note how evenly the strata has formed, and subsequently fractures. Neat, huh? Next, turn your attention to the mighty rapids. Even when the waterflow is low, the sheer power of this site can leave one awestruck. Do you think a fish might be able to make it up?
The cache itself is just past the bridge, right off the public fishing trail placed and maintained by Fort Drum for recreational use. It is a small container painted to better hide it from prying eyes. It only contains a log and an American Flag pin for the FTF, BYOP. Please only open it from the side the string is attached to, and close it tightly. It is only accessible from the north side of the river, from the shore. Do not attempt to use a boat to access this cache.
Be warned though, this is a precarious area. A fall into the river can be disaserous. If you are not confident in your ability to retrieve this cache, err on the side of caution. There are many other excellent caches in the area. Use your best judgment with the environment and conditions. As conditions may vary, it is the responsibility of the searcher to be familiar with the conditions in the area to be searched, to adequately prepare for those conditions, and to conduct oneself safely and responsibly and remain within his or her personal abilities and limitations. Children are not recommended to hunt for this cache.
