Geocache Description:

You are looking for a small screw top lid, plastic container.

Crataegus species is common referred to as a hawthorn (shrub).

These are the trees you curse when hiking through an open field, pasture or thicket.  You likely recognize this tree as having long dagger like thorns, and may even have been poked or stabbed by this sharp projectiles.  It is difficult to tell exactly what species of Hawthorn you are looking at, as they are difficult to tell apart in the wild due to frequent hybridizing.  But all plants have a small, wide-spreading canopies, small toothed leaves, clusters of white flowers and thorny twigs.  In the fall, hawthorns have clusters of small, apple-like fruits, typically red, orange, and yellow in colour. Hawthorns are tough, adaptable trees and prefer a well-drained soil,  They are very hardy, and tolerate dry, windy areas.  They are not typically browsed on by deer and other wildlife, given the roughness of there bark, and the sharp dagger like thorns. Since hawthorns are a member of the rose family, like crabapples, hawthorn fruits contain high levels of pectin and make delecious jams and jellies. Please be careful retreiving this cache, watch for thorns!
