Geocache Description:

Formonthills is a young woodland with lots to offer.  A total of 80,000 trees have been planted with the help of the local community, with wildflower meadows, wetland areas, abundant wildlife, several circular walks, and a commanding position offering spectacular views.  Don't forget to look out for sculptures along the way.  A mix of hard path and grass tracks take you on an exploration of this hillside with excellent views.

Iris pseudacorus more commonly known as the Yellow Flag Iris. A tall plant growing up to 1.5 metres in height with branched stems, large sword shaped leaves and lovely brightest yellow flowers.

The yellow iris was chosen as the County Flower of Wigtownshire and the county's marshy hollows are often flooded with its bright 'flags' . It is known locally as 'segg' or 'sword-grass', a reference to the equally remarkable blade-like leaves.

It flowers from May to July in a sunny spot. Found in marshy land or at the edge of rivers and lochs, preferring boggy land. A network of rhizehomes that soon spread and can quickly become invasive and choke canals if not controlled. The flower is thought by some to be the original 'fleur-de-lis' symbol in heraldry.
