Drake Salt Works Traditional Cache
shelleydee34: Sad that I have to archive it now. The new owner of the land has put up a gate and doesn't want anyone on the property.

This place holds many childhood memories for me. My family and friends would come here to camp and swim many years ago. On one occasion when I was very young I was floating on my raft and somehow floated away from everyone. I slid off of my raft and went under and could not swim in the deep water. It seemed like I was under the water forever when all of a sudden one of my dad's best friends jumped in and saved me. I have included some history of the area. You can find more information out online.
As always please be respectful of the area. Drake Salt Licks, the salt flats, were the scene of salt production beginning with the Natchitoches and Caddo Indians who lived in this area. Evaporation, leaching, or boiling were methods of making salt, which was a valuable commodity in early history.
Earliest reference to Drake's was made by Bienville in 1700. Enough salt was eventually produced to be used for trade by 1816 it was transported to Natchez and New Orleans. Reuben Drake became interested in the works in the 1840s and tried deeper borings. He sank eight wills. The Civil War brought brisk demand for the salt and production increased.
