Geocache Description:

This is an easy cache, with a location chosen simply for the view & handy parking not far away. It could even be included with the nearby Quarry Capers series, with just a short detour.

At over 350m above sea level, Longstone Edge affords a fantastic view across the Derbyshire Dales countryside. When looking for this cache, I recommend bringing a pair of binoculars & coming on a clear day when you will be able to fully appreciate the scenery on offer.

There are many local landmarks that can be seen from GZ. I have included some to help you get your bearings, working east to west;

• The Hunting Tower at Chatsworth; sadly the House is nestled behind the hill, although you can see the Emperor Fountain when it's switched on & also make out the roofs of The Stables if you walk a little higher.

• Riber Castle can just be made out on a clear day, perched on the hill above Matlock over 10 miles away.

• The television mast on Cromford Moor, with One Tree Hill at Oker in front of it.

• The television mast on Stanton Moor, with Stanton in Peak on the hillside.

• The wind turbines above Carsington Water over 12.5 miles away.

• The town of Bakewell, with its church steeple & then the village of Ashford in the Water, with Ashford Hall.

• Minninglow Hill (372m) on the horizon, with its taller trees in the centre of a ring, almost due south.

• Aleck Low (398m) with its wooded hilltop.

• Fin Cop & Monsall Dale, with Monsall Head in the foreground.

• In the valley below are the villages of Rowland, Great Longstone, with its central sports field & Little Longstone.

Of course there is plenty more to see, but I hope that that whets your appetite or helps you appreciate the views more. Photographs with your logs would be very much appreciated!

There is normally plenty of parking nearby, although it can be busier in the summer months. Please be careful when walking along the road to the cache. The cache is hidden to the south of the road, as Longstone Moor to the north is a scheduled ancient monument & also site of special scientific interest. You are welcome to visit this area at the same time, but please respect this special place.

Congratulations to cats-eyes for FTF!
