Geocache Description:

A short distance in just out of view of the the road. Easy walk in the woods. Parking on the shoulder is fine. Well marked trail into the area.

This is a respectable distance from a grave of a child that passed in 1847.

The young boy had boiling water tip on him from a stove; medical technology was primitive. He was buried near the family home. Some ten years later a fire tore through the once busy little town and destroyed many houses as well as the main employer, the mill. The community failed. Foundations remain in the area woods, there is nothing remaining of the home near which the child was buried, just woods and his gravestone. This lone grave has been kept up by local volunteers and is a hidden word of mouth history landmark. Now only vacation camps dot the lake nearby.

You can read more about the story of this area here: Franklin Falls

There is a log in book for the grave itself as well, sign it if you like but to avoid mugglers just sign the "how did you hear about the grave?" note as "GC". People leave things at the grave out of tradition, often tokens, coins, or flowers. Please be respectful and leave those items alone.

If you enjoyed your trip consider going on the Silver Lake bog trail some several miles away or canoe/kayak on the lake at the bottom of the hill (DEC Boat launch is down the River Road).

Leave the container facing not left to right from view of the trail but head on so it is not so easily visible to anyone looking. Feel free to lightly cover with a branch or brush.

Not one to hunt for when snow is on the ground, being a short distance from the known path muggles would follow prints and find it quickly.

Interesting to hunt for at night, bring a flashlight if you do!

I stop in from time to time to check on the cache and drop off fun items for trade. Please, if you can, try and trade something of equal or greater value to keep it fun for everyone else coming after.

I have added a reference point so you don't have to drive all the way into Bloomingdale or even Saranac Lake to get cell coverage if your app can't save caches offline. Norman's Ridge is not too far away and at least for Verizon there is GREAT coverage there (I don't know for other companies but that's the best bet location). Get a map screenshot if needed / use 3rd party GPS app.
