E’ un passaggio che collega Campo de' Fiori con via del Teatro di Pompeo. Sorge proprio sotto uno dei palazzi costruiti sopra i resti del Teatro di Pompeo, il primo teatro in muratura di Roma. Il restauro è dovuto ad un privato con le autorizzazioni della Soprintendenza.
L'origine del nome Biscione è controversa, dovrebbe risalire all´'insegna di una hosteria segnalata qui agli inizi del Quattrocento, ma c´'è chi fa riferimento al biscione presente nello stemma degli Orsini, all´'epoca proprietari del palazzo ancora oggi esistente sulla piazzetta.
Chiamata anche “Grottapinta” dall'Arco di Grottapinta che da il nome alla strada e che la collega a piazza del Biscione. Sulla piazza, tra gli antichi affreschi, probabilmente ridipinti su affreschi ancora più antichi, c'era anche l'immagine di una madonna settecentesca, la miracolosa Madonna del latte: pare che nel luglio del 1756 abbia mosso prodigiosamente gli occhi e, fatto ancora più incredibile, contemporaneamente ad altre numerose immagini romane della Vergine.
Oggi nella grottapinta c'è un modesto quadretto con un lume sempre acceso da un comune interruttore.
Usciti dal passetto sulla destra si affaccia via di Grottapinta, curvilinea come la struttura sottostante del Teatro di Pompeo. Qui vi è la chiesa sconsacrata di S. Maria di Grottapinta, sorta a testata terminale del palazzo del Biscione, e qui indicata come Cappella Orsini, che custodiva una preziosa immagine della Vergine ora a San Lorenzo in Damaso. Nel 1926 la chiesa di Grottapinta o S. Salvatore in Arco è stata sconsacrata, ridotta in abbandono, poi diventata un magazzino e oggi è sede dell'associazione “Accademia del superfluo”.
Si narra anche che sulla piazza del Biscione fino agli inizi del 900 c'era uno scrivano pubblico che scriveva lettere "confidenziali" (amorose), "ordinarie", "ardenti" e "ardentissime". Il prezzo ovviamente era adeguato al tipo.

This passage connects Campo de' Fiori with Via del Teatro di Pompeo. It is located right beneath one of the palaces built over the remains of Pompey's Theater, the first stonework theater in Rome. The restoration is due to a private with the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism’s authorization.
The origin of the name is not well known, may be from the banner of a hosteria reported here at the beginning of the fifteenth century, but there are those who refer to the snaks in the emblem of the Orsini Family, then owners of the still existing building on the square .
Also called "Grottapinta" due to the Grottapinta arch that gives its name to the street that connects the passage to Piazza del Biscione. On a side of the square an ancient frescoes, probably repainted on the more ancient ones, with the image an eighteenth century Madonna, the miraculous Madonna of the milk: it seems that in July 1756 she moved prodigiously eyes and, even more incredibly, at the same time as other Roman images of the Virgin.
Today in Grottapinta there is a modest little picture with a light on continuously artificially.
Leaving the passage on via Grottapinta, a curvilinear steet like the underlying structure of the Theatre of Pompey. Here there is the former church of S. Maria di Grottapinta, built in the head end of the Biscione building, and here referred to as the Chapel Orsini, who kept a precious image of the Virgin now in San Lorenzo in Damaso.
