Cache is a small camouflaged container hidden on an 'island' of residential homes in Cudia Estates.
According to Republic artist, Gus Walker, and the book ‘The Golden Days of Theaters in Phoenix' (Jerry Reynolds), the area used to be a motion picture studio. In the late 1930s - early ’40s, Salvatore Cudia, “a longtime showman in Europe and Los Angeles,” built 'Cudia City.' Cudia City was the Valley’s first motion picture studio and was situated in the area of Camelback and 40th Street.
Cudia City turned out such film classics as 'Phantom Pinto,' 'Buzzie Rides the Range,' 'Let Freedom Ring' and 'Trail City.' After World War II, the 'Red Ryder' movies, starring Wild Bill Elliot, were filmed there. According to Reynolds, “filming at Cudia City reached its zenith with '26Men,' a Western series for television. Unfortunately, progress brought cars, planes and utility poles to the area and outdoor shooting was prohibited.
Cudia City then turned into a local tourist attraction, restaurant and theater and was eventually torn down to make way for residential development.
Enjoy your 'tour' and please be very respectful of the area and the neighborhood’s residents.
