Mill Wood Circular #1
This area is located on a former branch line of the Clarence railway and marks the start of a series of caches around the area of Mill Wood.
The Clarence lines took coal from the many mines sunk in the areas of Aycliffe, Ferryhill and Coxhoe and transported it to Port Clarence on the river Tees and Hartlepool. This was the first railway in history designed to compete with another line, competing with the more famous Stockton and Darlington Railway.
Before the Clarence reached Ferryhill NZ3230, the Chilton branchline meandered off it in 1835-6 crossing the former Great North Road where Chilton Branch Library now stands, towards Chilton Colliery NZ2730, Leasingthorne Colliery NZ2530 and finally Westerton Old Pit.This stretch of the Clarence just about kept its head above water until Friday, December 2, 1960, when the last coal train ran.
