Geocache Description:

Kowloon Walled City(九龍寨城)

The history of the Kowloon Walled City dates from the Sung Dynasty of 960-1297, when it began as a small fort to house the imperial soldiers who controlled the salt trade.

In 1841, when Hong Kong Island was ceded to Britain, Kowloon Walled City was already a garrison and was reinforced by the Chinese Government.

The fort's fate changed in 1898 when the New Territories were leased to Britain for 99 years. Although the walled city remained Chinese territory by treaty, the following year their troops and officials were forced to vacate. Behind them they left a power vacuum that was filled by criminals, and the garrison became a city within a city, since for around 100 years, Kowloon Walled City became a lawless enclave since none of the Hong Kong Government, British Government or Chinese Government really govern it.

When the Japanese invaded in the second world war, they demolished the oldest standing part of the Walled City - its wall, used in work on Kai Tak airport. But the destruction didn't prevent Chinese refugees flocking to the site after the war. By the late 1980s, this 2.7-hectare enclave was home to 35,000 people. It was the most densely populated place in the world.

Kowloon Walled City Park(九龍寨城公園)
The Walled City's fate was finally decided in January 1987, when the government announced plans to demolish it. After an arduous eviction process, demolition began in March 1993 and was completed in April 1994. Kowloon Walled City Park opened on the site in December 1995.

Today, the Chinese-style park preserves traces of the walled city, most notably its yamen which was built in the early 1800s and served as a military headquarters. Remnants of its South Gate have also been preserved.
