This cache is part of a combined effort by Richmond and Hampton Roads geocachers to place geocaches along the Virginia Capitol Trail.
The VCT Historical Society has recreated the concept of the ice house, where ice was buried under sawdust. Meats, milk, and other foodstuffs subject to spoilage were placed in with the ice and sawdust to stay cool. The VCT Historical Society has placed a snowflake under wood products to recreate the principle of the icehouse. Please think of what our ancestors went through to preserve their foods the next time you find that 7-month old container of sour cream in the back of the fridge.
