LA BATTAGLIA DI SORIO
Nella giornata dell’8 aprile 1848 si svolse nel territorio di Sorio un tragico fatto d’arme che vide coinvolti da una parte giovani universitari di Schio, Treviso e Padova, addestrati da alcuni reduci delle guerre napoleoniche, e soprannominati “crociati” a causa della croce rossa che portavano sul braccio o sul petto, riuniti sotto la guida del Generale Marc’Antonio San Fermo, e dall’altra parte il soverchiante esercito austriaco sotto il comando del Maggiore Generale Principe di Liechtenstein.
L’esito dello scontro fu a favore delle forze austriache e sul terreno rimasero una cinquantina di studenti. A ricordo di quel fatto fu eretto nel 1868 un obelisco che compare, tra l’altro anche nello stemma comunale.

On the 8th of April 1848 it took place in the territory of Sorio a tragic feat of arms which saw involved on the one hand young university’s students living in Schio, Treviso and Padua, trained by some veterans of the Napoleonic wars, and dubbed "Crusaders" because of red cross who carried on the arm or chest, gathered under the leadership of General Marc’Antonio San Fermo, and on the other hand, the overwhelming Austrian army under the command of Major General Prince of Liechtenstein.
The outcome of the battle was in favor of the Austrian forces and about fifty students died.
A reminder of that fact was built in 1868 an obelisk that appears, among other things, into the emblem of the City of Gambellara.
