Geocache Description:

Did you know this bridge was armed to guard Nambour during WW2? Although a rural road it can be quite busy so please take care, in particular with children when crossing the road. Congratulations to SECRET7 for FTF !

In World War 2, the main northern highway was through Woombye to Nambour. The only secondary road open to vehicles ( unless the traffic went up over the Range through Montville and Mapleton) followed the Blackall Range Road, along the then unnamed Menary Road to Coes Creek and back to Nambour. James Menary was the landholder from the 1886's; his grandson Lewis Menary remembers those war years. "In order to keep this alternate route open in case of Japanese invasion from the north, gun emplacements were sited near the bridge, one on the eastern and one each side of the western approach. The last hole was filled in about 1987. The anti-aircraft guns were 25 pounders on a fixed base with nets to provide camouflage. Hundreds of Australian soldiers camped on Reid's Road near Merv Muller's farm and came daily in jeeps and with bren-gun carriers to the Menary Road drill grounds which were the Nicholaisin diary flats." The bridge was badly damaged and partly washed away during one flood and was then temporarily repaired until a new bridge could be built. About 1948, the new bridge took 2 years to build at a cost of 1,800 pounds. The road was gazetted as a public road in 1894 and the Menary family maintaned it for many years in order to deliver their pineapples to the Woombye Railway Station. It was not officially named Menary Road until the 1960's. With thanks to : Nambour Street Names - Their Origin and History, by Barbara Want.
