Geocache Description:

A Letterbox Hybrid cache which has been placed a short distance away from the church. The views from close to the GZ are quite stunning on a clear day.

This church has hit the headlines recently. It has been announced that the Church will close at the end of August 2017.

St Just is one of the oldest mining parishes in Cornwall. In the mid-1880s, it was a real mining-boom town having grown steadily over the previous half century. Mines had sprung up all over the district and there was plenty of work for everyone. As the Cornish mining industry collapsed in the late 19th century there was a mass exodus of miners to the new world as a desperate poverty settled over those left at St Just.

The Methodist Church was founded in the eighteenth century by John Wesley. The original group remained the strongest in West Cornwall and are shown here as “Wesleyan”. By 1851, the various branches of Methodism easily outstripped all other denominations combined in Cornwall, when attendance was counted in the census, including the established Church of England. Baptism in the Methodist churches was uncommon before 1815 and even in the 1830s many Wesleyans were baptised in the parish church. Prior to 1837, marriage was not permitted in any place other than the Anglican Church!
For more information see this link

Even after 1837, not all chapels were licenced nor were the registrars prepared to travel to inaccessible placesso the local parish church is still worth checking. The register would have used the civil registration books. After 1898 chapels could be licenced, not requiring a registrar, but not many took this up. Those that did held their own registers.

The Chapel has been dubbed the Miners Cathedral and can seat up to 700 people on two levels.

It really is worthwhile paying this chapel a visit if you have time. It is a larger scale version of the original Wesleyan Chapel in Bristol.
