霧島山系の湧き水が侵食し、数千年の長い年月をかけて作られたといわれる洞穴は、横13.8m、高さ8.6mあり全長224mまで探検隊の調査により確認されています。 内部の一番広い部分は幅が約40mで，天井部はアーチ型になっています。
洞穴は，約25,000年前に姶良カルデラから噴出した大隅降下軽石層と，シラス(入戸火砕流堆積物)の溶結した溶結凝灰岩の中に形成されており，雨水がシラスや軽石を外に運び去って，徐々に空洞が拡大されてできたものです。 また，洞穴内には縄文時代人の生活跡もあり，当時の生活を知る上でも重要です。
昭和30年に県の天然記念物に指定されました。最近は、パワースポットとして注目を集めています。
毎年4月8日のお釈迦様の誕生日に近い日曜日に「溝ノ口岩穴祭り」が開催されています。
This cave took long time of several thousand years, and a spring of Mount Kirishima origin eroded and was made. This cave is 13.8m in width, 8.6m in height, 224m in total length. In this cave, the widest part has a width of approximately 40m, and the ceiling becomes arched.
This cave is formed of the Osumi descent pumice layer and tufa of Shirasu(Ito pyroclastic flow) which erupted from Aira Caldera approximately 25,000 years ago. In this cave, rainwater carried away Shirasu and pumice outside and a cavity was gradually expanded and was made.
In this cave, there is the life trace of the person in Jomon period, too and is important in knowing the then life.
