Shaker Landing Stroll Traditional Cache

All trail users must check in at The Inn at Shaker Village front desk or ticket booth each day to sign a waiver of liability and check out a gate key. Please observe and respect this and all other trail guidelines when visiting.

1826 RIVER ROAD TRAIL

Follow the gravel village road to the east end of the village, cross US 68 (very carefully) and follow the paved River Road approximately one fourth mile. Look for the trail marker on the left side of the road, and take the steps where the trail follows an old roadbed built by the Shakers in 1826 to Shaker Landing. As you walk this prtion of the trail, imagine stagecoaches and wagons filled with passengers traveling along this narrow road, Your descent of 400 feet into the Kentucky River Gorge will you through millions of years of geologic history.

At Shaker Landing you will see the historic High Bridge which spans the Kentucky River, foundations of Shaker buildings, and the restored timber frame stable and and interpretive center. The sternwheeler, Dixie Belle, cruises the Kentucky River from its dock at Shaker Landing.

You return to the village by (a) using the same trail, or (b) walking the paved road originally built by the Shakers in 1861. The trail is beautiful at any time of year, but is quite majestic in the spring, when the hills are carpeted with patchwork of showy wildflowers. Use caution where the trail parallels cliff areas.

ABOUT THE CACHE

The cache is a matchstick container with log only. As always, bring your own writing instrument.

The location of the cache is a bit away from the end of River Road trail on flat ground. IN the spring the wildflowers make for sight in the nearby meadow.

Although the trail starts from Shaker Village, you can access this area from the parking area at Shaker Landing when the Dixie Belle is running.
