To the north was the Athabasca Landing Trail. The Hudson’s Bay Company built the trail in 1876, with a staging area at the Lamoureux, across the river from Fort Saskatchewan. Known as the “100 Mile Portage,” it was an overland route between the North Saskatchewan and the Athabasca Rivers, and a critical link to northern communities. At first it was used by fur traders from Fort Edmonton and the Beaver Hills. By the turn of the 20th Century, the gold rush and an influx of settlers had turned it into the busiest northern route in Canada.
