CACHE: No need to leave the road. Watch for wasps and poison ivy, there weren't any bees when I first placed it but it wasn't bee season then. Should be fairly easy to locate.
HISTORY: Carpenter's Station was also known as Oregon. The main post office for Oregon Township was here, although the hall, which is still standing, is located at Marathon and Klam intersection. Carpenters as it's often called was created as a stop between Columbiaville and Lapeer on the Detroit and Bay City Railroad. The depot was built in 1873. Photos of this depot haven't been found. The post office was established in October 1873 and the first postmaster was Sarah A. Carpenter, one of Samuel Carpenter's 3 wives. The office was ran out of the home and the depot over the years. Samuel came to Michigan from Vermont, settling first in Almont, then Flint and finally at Oregon. He was a successful lumberman, and had a mill near the railroad and river here. He also owned acreage on Davis Lake. It is unknown what exactly happened, but in 1888 Samuel died a poor man, leaving 3 daughters. The post office closed in 1905.
RAIL TRAIL: This section of the railroad is mixed private and state property. There's talk about purchasing land back to continue a rail trail from Rowden Park in Lapeer to the Southern Links Trail in Columbiaville. This will be a huge undertaking since several sections are current driveways, runs through front yards and as can be seen at Carpenter's Station, the old bed is just steps out the back door of a home. Deviations from the original path will be a compromise, a worthy one.
