Tour the home of Brigadier General Nicholas Herkimer, who became and American Hero during the battle of Oriskany in 1777.  He was seriously wounded and later died at home.

Herkimer had no children, so his home passed to his brother George, whose son John sold it out of the family in 1814.  It changed hands 6 times after and, in considerable disrepair, it was aquired by the State of NY in 1913.

Preservation begun in 1914, and in the 1960's a major restoration was completed, although elements of architectural alterations made in the 19th century remain.

The unspoiled landscape is remarkably unchanged from that of the 18th century.  The 19th century barn has been remodeled as a visitor center, which houses interpretive exhibits.

Memorial Day to Labor Day the visitor center is open Wed-Sat from 10am to 5pm, and Sunday from 1pm to 5pm. Guided tours of the historic home are available Fri, Sat and Sunday.

Each of the Herkimer Home series geocaches has Colonial paper money.  Collect 3 examples of this money, bring them to the visitor center for your surprise!!!
