Geocache Description:

Natura 2000 #5

'Natura 2000' is a term that stands for the network of protected areas in the European Union. It is meant to protect fauna and flora - the most rare and the most endangered species, together with the EU's landscape.
The island of Lesvos is proud of its landscape and unique ecosystem, which composes of many animal species.

This island has a wide variety of birds which get attracted by wetlands. The most important wetland is located in the Kalloni Bay. This bay offers lagoons and seashores, and it's a part of the Natura 2000 project. One can enjoy the sight of many birds, such as flamingos, black storks, buzzards, kestrels, and many others.

The large variety of the island's ecosystem includes many mammals, amphibians, insects, and reptiles. Among those there are many animals belonging to protected species - bats, tortoises, and reptiles. Krüper's nuthatch (Sitta krueperi) and Persian squirrel (Sciurus anomalus) are typical species for Lesvos, as it's the only place in Europe these animals inhabit.
