Bidadari, one the oldest and largest cemeteries in Singapore dated back to 1907. It was the resting place of more than 147,000 Christians, Muslims, Hindus and Singhalese till its closure in 1972. Exhumation took place between 2001 and 2006 to make way for public housing
I had been to the Christian section with my mother to visit graves of relatives I've never known on All Soul’s Day. But the section that lay beyond Upper Aljunied Road, the Muslim section, was a no-go zone. While the Christian graves were in an orderly grid, the other side had plenty of sinister looking trees, overgrown grass and headstones sticking out of the earth in unexpected places.
Today however, I feel the urge to visit this place before the lush vegetation is primmed into manicured housing garden landscape. Best accessed from Upper Aljunied road, the same twisty trees are still there, and if you venture to the narrow muddy paths you might find half buried headstones. Careful not to fall into exhumed graves camo-ed by tangles of grass. But fear not, you are more likely to see Gurkhas taking a short cut to Mount Vernon, joggers and if you’re lucky, squirrels, birds ( and hopefully, the cache ).
