Geocache Description:

Near GZ

How fitting that this is hide #333! . This is one of the harder ones I've placed, please see extended description. BYOP.

Parking at the Coon Rapids Dam - Champlin (South) side is the best place to launch from (you can NOT launch from the Coon Rapids side, else you will go over the falls and die), but getting back up river when you are done could prove very challenging. The current coming from the dam made it impossible for me to get back up river. I had to paddle down to the other parking coords to get out. Please respect the mighty Mississippi, there are lots of rocks, can be shallow at times, and has some unpredictable currents. It's best to bring a friend, and park two vehicles, one at either parking coordinates. Please be safe about this hide! The best landing is on the East side, there is a beach that you can easily get onto.

Please note - this cache is in a potentially dangerous location and seeking it is done at your own risk! I strongly recommend against doing this in the winter, as ice on rivers is always unpredictable. Legal entry points (PWAs) are provided, other entry points may be considered trespassing on private property. The terrain rating reflects the need to travel a significant distance on water.

If traveling by kayak, this is the route I take to get here, as well as some notes. This assumes that you will be landing down-river, as it's not likely possible to paddle back up against the current from the dam.

On 04/21/2019 I took some videos that you may find useful as you plan your trip. The landing video starts with me cutting over from the right side of the river to the left side to land on the left/East. It's a hard paddle that you don't have a lot of time to get ready for. If the river is high, the right side will work, but if the water is low, you will definitely want to land on the left side (as you're travelling down river).

(notice on the leaving video I'm paddling very hard at first, that's to get around the tree downriver from my exit point. The river will push you into an obstacle like that and pin you onto it. It's generally better to launch from a spot that doesn't have an obstacle directly downriver of you, but this was the best I had at the time)
