Geocache Description:

An abandoned boardwalk trail leads 3/4 mile through forest and muskeg to this cache and an overlook of the Rio Roberts Creek fish passage.

One of my favorite hiking trails on the island and you'll likely have it all to yourself as it has pretty much been abandoned by the Forest Service. The original trailhead was removed during the realignment of the Thorne Bay highway and now you need a little local knowledge to find it. Parking is available on a logging road pullout on the east side of the Rio Roberts Creek bridge. The start of the trail is on the west side of the bridge and can be spotted heading south into the woods right near the end of the bridge guardrail.

Fish passages have been constructed in several of the island's river systems to provide migrating salmon and steelhead access to additional habitat upstream of natural barriers. Interprative signs placed at the overlook provide details on fish passages and coho salmon. At the right time of year buckbean, deer cabbage, shootingstar, butterwort, labrador tea and many other wildflowers can be spotted blooming along the boardwalk.
