Before the early 1990s this area had a steep, (barely) 2-lane gravel road called Greenlevel-to-Durham Road, the most direct route between Durham to the north and the Greenlevel community south of here. It had a washboard effect when you drove on it, especially if it hadn't been graded in awhile and it had rained. You could drive about 40mph, but you'd nearly lose your teeth or car parts with the bumps. Twenty mph was much kinder to all. Near this point the road was lower than it is now because it crossed Morris Branch stream. Eventually, GTDR was raised here and lowered on the rise nearby so that it could be paved and marked for bonafide 2 lanes. Now this is a 5-lane divided road carrying many commuters north to RTP. Congratulations to BigR1 for FTF!
