This cache is one in a short loop of less than two miles, starting at Paradise Road playing fields in Writtle, where there is plenty of parking from 8 a.m. until 11.30 pm (no night caching please!) Alternatively, you could park by the church at Widford where there are a few spaces - although not when there's a wedding! The loop works just as well both ways around.
Chelmsford City Council has just introduced Red Poll cattle to graze this field, which has always been used for haymaking. The City Council is working in partnership with the Essex Grazing Project to bring a herd of Red Poll cattle to the meadow. Red Polls are a traditional breed, native to East Anglia. They are ideally suited to grazing sites that are important for wildlife and open to the public. Lighter than most commercial continental breeds, they happily forage on vegetation and have a docile temperament. The meadow is a haven for wildlife, especially butterfiles. The cattle are fenced off away from walkers and dogs.
